Smart Playlists Wont Recognize Songs

majority of my songs are in .m4a format. some are in .mp3 format, both 128kbps and 256kbps. Smart playlists wont recognize both file formats in the same playlist. Thought buying the proversion would solve this issue. Now ive lost my play stats changing versions, and my problem hasnt been fixed.
